Based on the information gathered in the field, the fire was originated from a freezer due to short-circuit. Not long after, sparks came out and made explosion sound. Fire then quickly enlarged and burned the house’s roof. Seeing it, house inhabitants panicked and shouted fire.

“I heard explosion sound from the freezer. Suddenly, sparks came out and the freezer burned,” told Romy (36), one of housekeepers.

Within minutes, the two-story house burned to the ground. The locals had tried to put out the flames but they failed due to lack of water sources and strong wind.

Head of Operation Section for East Jakarta Fire and Disaster Handling Sub-Department, Mulyanto, stated that nine fire trucks were sent to the scene. Firemen had difficulties to reach the location because there were many motorcycles and cars belong to UNJ students parked on the street. Moreover, many accesses to fire location were also closed. Thus, they had to circle the area to find alternative access.

“The fire location is inside IKIP housing complex. Thus, there were many students’ vehicles parked. Not to mention the roads that were closed, so we were having difficulties to reach fire location,” he finished.
